LAW TO SUPERVISE NGOs

The National Assembly of Venezuela approved on Tuesday in a first discussion a bill for the control and regularization of non-governmental groups in the country, a regulation that has caused a stir among activists.
For the norm to be definitively approved, a second discussion is required, whose date will be "peremptory," said Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly dominated by the ruling party, without specifying details.
The 15-page project entitled "Law on the control, regularization, action and financing of non-governmental and related organizations" was presented in Parliament by Deputy Diosdado Cabello, second in command of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV).
NGOs must declare their inventory of assets, balance sheets, financial statements and "relationship of donations received with full identification of the donors, indicating whether they are nationals or foreigners," according to a text released by the National Assembly.
These non-governmental groups will be prohibited from "carrying out political activities, promoting or allowing actions that threaten national stability and the institutions of the Republic," among others, according to the text.
